"I construct alternative environments in my work. I want my paintings to draw the viewer in and surround him with large, lyrical landscapes alive with colliding and intertwining symbols, memories, history and imaginings, and this is achieved through the use of perversely careful repetition and the creation of tiny minutia. Recently, my work has incorporated forests of arms, sometimes configured into the symbolic gestures of Boddhisattvas, sometimes coiled and entwined around one another, but always disembodied and always grasping at nothing. Similarly, I often begin pieces with traditional Chinese brushwork, but combine this traditional foundation with digital and Asian pop or graphic elements such as stickers or origami paper, or otherworldly and fantasy objects. These themes make up the details in the environments I construct in each painting, but they also describe a sense of rootless-ness, culture, and personal history.
Hence, although my pieces create imaginary environments, they allude to the real world in an attempt to realize another and are impressed upon by very real concerns. I identify as half Caucasian and half Taiwanese and grew up in the US, China, Korea, Taiwan, and Israel as the daughter of a diplomat, and all of these realities effect my work."
