"In each of these recent paintings and drawings, I am exploring the themes of mortality and mourning. These images were born out of a creative process of pushing and pulling between what is still and certain in life and what is fleeting. The figures in the paintings are struggling to find their place within the composition. Some have the feeling of being embedded within the landscape, while others are hovering above, inhabiting a kind of transitional space, oscillating between absence and presence. Through the combined techniques of collage, painting, and drawing, I work alternately to clarify and obscure what is earthbound and solid and what is intangible and ethereal. Working in this manner is almost like the experience of going back and forth with a camera lens, moving in and out of focus. When an image becomes obscured and less certain, sometimes that is the moment that another image emerges: a new form can appear like a ghostly apparition. This tenuous compositional state is what excites me in art because it is most like the fragility and fleetingness of life itself."
