This is a very special ring of my own design, size 5, made of hand-forged silver and featuring a created Alexandrite center stone fit for a princess.
Alexandrite is a chameleon! It is color-change stone, i.e. a stone with certain physical properties that allow it to fluoresce, that is, bend light waves differently under different light conditions. In my opinion, there is no stone more magical and majestic than Alexandrite.
This particular stone “slumbers.” Sometimes it appears to be clear, almost invisible, as though it is trying to disappear! In strong light it takes on a pale lavender hue, and in softer light it turns pale green.
Alexandrite is a stone not many people know about, probably because in its natural form it can be more expensive by carat weight than diamonds and it is far more rare. Natural Alexandrite was first found in Russia, and it is named after Alexander II.
The source of inspiration for this ring is the Princess Alexandra of the Russian Royal Family. She was one of its last surviving members, and her heartbreaking story as told in the book “Nicholas and Alexandra” touched me deeply more that twenty years ago. |
